Organically grown Sweetgrass – Hierochloe odorata in a 9cm pot. A hardy perennial grass growing up to 60cm (2ft) tall, with slender green leaves that develop a distinctive sweet, vanilla like fragrance when dried. Sweetgrass spreads gently by rhizomes to form soft clumps and is well suited to moist gardens, wildlife areas and thoughtful, intentional plantings.
Uses
Sweetgrass has a long history of ceremonial and cultural use, particularly among Indigenous peoples of North America, where it is traditionally associated with purification, gratitude and connection to place. The dried leaves are often braided or gently burned as incense and the plant has also been used in traditional crafts such as basket weaving and cordage.
As beautifully explored in Robin Wall Kimmerer’s Braiding Sweetgrass, this plant is closely linked with ideas of reciprocity, care and respectful relationship between people, plants and the land.

Folklore
Sweetgrass holds deep cultural and spiritual significance, particularly among Indigenous peoples of North America, where it has long been regarded as a plant of peace, kindness and right relationship. Known as one of the sacred grasses, it was associated with welcome, harmony and the strengthening of communal bonds. In wider plant folklore, Sweetgrass came to symbolise gentleness and goodwill, its sweet scent believed to invite positive presence and calm rather than drive anything away. It is remembered as a plant that softens spaces, encouraging connection, respect and a sense of belonging.
