From the nursery

Winter has settled in here and while the polytunnels look quieter on the surface, there’s a lot quietly beginning beneath the soil and behind the scenes. Heated propagators are coming back into use, seeds are being counted out and the rhythm of the year is slowly turning again.

This is always a liminal time for me. One foot still in winter’s dark, the other already leaning toward spring. It feels like the right moment to share what we’re starting, what’s coming and what’s quietly underway here at Pretty Wild Plants.

The Main Update

I’ve just started a long, slow piece of work: making a flying ointment using a recipe from the Poison Prescriptions book by The Seed Sistas. It’s a year long process, with different plants added each month in alignment with the moon and the seasons and the final balm will be finished in January 2027.

I’ve made this ointment once before and found the process deeply satisfying, not just as a piece of traditional craft but as a way of truly working with the plants over time. This time, I’m choosing to share the process as it unfolds, with monthly updates on Facebook and Instagram for anyone who’d like to follow along. It feels like a good way to slow down, to show how these plants are worked with and to offer something that isn’t about selling but about practice.

Alongside that, seed sowing has begun. The fridge is already filling up with trays of seeds gently stratifying, waiting for their moment. It’s early days, but the growing year has officially started here!

Star of the Season

This month’s star is our Fire Cider.
It will now be available in a new 200ml bottle, for those of you who use it regularly.

It’s still the same slow made tonic, infused with plants grown here and prepared in small batches, just in a more generous size that makes winter dosing a little easier.

Upcoming Events

Our first live event of the year will be the Welshpool Magical Conference. This is one of our favorite conferences to attend, it’s always such a warm and welcoming atmosphere and the line up of speakers is truly stellar this year.
I’ll be there with plants and apothecary goods.

Tickets and details are available via the Welshpool Magical Conference website.

Looking Ahead

In February, the next small batch of mandrakes will be available. If you’re interested, please sign up to the waitlist, as numbers are always limited. Once these are gone, the next batch won’t be available until autumn / winter later this year.

Most live plant sales are still resting for winter, but waiting lists are open for everything. Adding your name now makes spring ordering simple when the time comes.

Be well,
Ruth
