Organically grown Belladonna - Atropa belladonna in a 9cm pot. A striking perennial herb growing up to around 1.5m (5ft) tall, with dark-green, ovate leaves and nodding, bell shaped purple flowers that bloom from June to September. These are followed by glossy black berries. Native to woodland edges and shady, undisturbed places, Belladonna has a strong, commanding presence and a long, complex history of human use.
Historically used in herbal medicine for its potent sedative and antispasmodic properties, Belladonna was always approached with extreme caution due to its strength. All parts of the plant are highly toxic and must not be ingested. Today it is primarily grown for educational, historical and botanical interest.

Folklore
A plant of shadow and profound transformation, Belladonna has long occupied a place of both reverence and fear in European magical tradition. Its botanical name, Atropa, is taken from Atropos, one of the three Greek Fates who cut the thread of life, a reminder of the plant’s association with mortality and irreversible change. In folklore, Belladonna is closely linked to liminal figures such as Hecate and Circe, goddesses and enchantresses who move between worlds and wield knowledge that is dangerous as well as powerful. It was historically associated with spirit flight, trance, and boundary crossing magic, most famously as a component of flying ointments. Though valued for divination, spirit work and protection, Belladonna has always been approached with great caution, its potency demanding respect, restraint, and deep understanding.
Magical Correspondence
Planet: Saturn
Element: Earth
Deity: Hecate, Circe
Day of the Week: Saturday
Magical Uses: Transformation, boundary crossing, shadow work.
Belladonna is a plant of Saturn in its most uncompromising form, concerned with limits, endings, and the thresholds between states of being. In magical tradition, it is associated with the crossing of boundaries, particularly those between life and death, waking and dreaming, seen and unseen. Its presence belongs to rites of transformation rather than everyday workings, and it is approached with caution, restraint and respect.
Worked with symbolically, Belladonna is linked to shadow work, ancestral memory, and the dismantling of illusion. It is a plant aligned with confronting what is hidden or avoided, and with recognising the structures of power, fate, and consequence that shape human experience. Rather than offering comfort or softness, Belladonna teaches discipline, discernment, and the necessity of limits. It reminds the practitioner that true protection and transformation often come through restraint and an acceptance of endings as part of change.
