Organically grown Coltsfoot - Tussilago farfara in a 9cm pot.                             A hardy, spreading perennial best known for its unusual growth habit. Bright yellow, dandelion-like flowers appear very early in the year, often in late winter or early spring, before any leaves are visible. The large, soft, hoof-shaped leaves emerge later, giving the plant its common name. Native to Europe and parts of Asia, Coltsfoot is commonly found along roadsides, riverbanks and areas of disturbed ground.

Uses

Coltsfoot has a long history of use in traditional herbal medicine, particularly in relation to the respiratory system. Its leaves and flowers were commonly used in preparations for coughs, bronchial irritation and chest complaints, reflected in its botanical name Tussilago, meaning “cough dispeller”. The plant is also valued ecologically for its ability to stabilise soil and quickly colonise disturbed or degraded ground.

Growing Information

Thrives in poor, clay or compacted soils and tolerates conditions that many garden plants find challenging. Grows well in full sun to partial shade and prefers consistently moist ground. Coltsfoot spreads readily via underground rhizomes and can be vigorous once established, so thoughtful placement or containment is recommended in garden settings. Particularly well suited to wildlife areas, rough ground and naturalised planting schemes. Leave foliage in place over winter to provide ground cover and habitat, cutting back as needed in spring.

Folklore

Coltsfoot has long been a familiar presence in the British landscape, appearing along paths, banks, and disturbed ground at the turning of the year. Its bright yellow flowers emerge before the leaves in late winter and early spring, a timing that gave rise to associations with renewal, reassurance, and the quiet return of life after hardship. In Wales and across the British Isles, Coltsfoot was regarded as a humble yet dependable plant, closely linked to seasonal transition and everyday folk knowledge rather than ceremony or display. It carries the character of a wayside ally, one that marks the passage from darkness into light and reminds us of nature’s steady persistence.
