Organically grown Datura innoxia - Moonflower, in a 9cm pot. A fast growing annual with large, velvety, grey-green leaves and dramatic, trumpet shaped white flowers that bloom from summer into autumn. The flowers are strongly fragrant, particularly in the evening and at night, and are followed by distinctive spiny seed pods. In favourable conditions, plants can reach up to around 1 metre (3ft) in height, creating a bold and architectural presence.
Grown primarily for its ornamental impact and historical significance, Datura innoxia is valued for its large, night scented flowers and striking seed pods. All parts of the plant are highly toxic and must not be ingested. It is best suited to gardeners with an interest in historically important plants, educational collections, or carefully considered ornamental displays.

Growing Information
Thrives in fertile moisture retentive but well drained soil in full sun. Prefers a warm, sheltered position and performs well in containers or sunny borders. Protect from frost at all stages. Water regularly during the growing season but avoid waterlogging. No routine pruning is required; remove spent flowers if seed production is not desired. Generally pest free, though plants may occasionally be susceptible to viral issues. Handle with care and site thoughtfully away from children and pets.
Folklore
Datura has been regarded across cultures as a plant of profound danger and spiritual power. Found in many parts of the world, it appears in Indigenous, shamanic, and folk traditions as a threshold plant, one that opens the gates between waking consciousness and the spirit realm. In European lore it became associated with witchcraft, night magic and sorcery, while elsewhere it was treated as a sacred but perilous teacher, approached only with strict ritual context and deep respect. Often linked to spirits of the night, crossroads and the dead, Datura occupies a liminal position between vision and madness, insight and loss. Across traditions, it is understood not as a benevolent ally, but as a plant that demands humility, caution, and surrender to forces beyond ordinary control.
