Dyer’s Chamomile is a radiant perennial with feathery green leaves and abundant yellow daisy like blooms that glow throughout the summer. A classic dye plant and a symbol of sunlight and vitality, it has long been used to create beautiful shades of golden yellow on natural fibres. Though less commonly used medicinally than its cousin German Chamomile, it shares the same gentle, sunny energy of calm and restoration.

Uses

Traditionally used to dye wool, silk, and cotton shades of golden yellow to warm amber. The dried flowers may also be added to incense blends for happiness and clarity, or used decoratively in craft and potpourri.

Directions for use

For dyeing, simmer the dried flowers in water for 30–45 minutes before adding clean, pre-mordanted fibres. Adjust time and concentration for deeper colour. For incense or potpourri, add the flowers to blends for brightness and cheer.

Ingredients

Dyer’s Chamomile (Anthemis tinctoria)

Growing Information
Folklore

Chamomile has long been a symbol of the sun, renewal and steadfastness. Dyer’s Chamomile, with its glowing blooms, was said to carry the light of the summer sun into the darker months. In old herb gardens it was planted to attract bees and to lift the spirits of those who passed. Its golden dye was once used to colour ceremonial garments and household cloths as a charm for warmth and prosperity.
