Organically grown Fox and Cubs – Pilosella aurantiaca in a 9cm pot. A striking, low growing perennial wildflower with vivid orange to red, dandelion-like flowers held on slender, leafless stems above a basal rosette of softly hairy leaves. Flowering from late spring through to early autumn, it spreads by stolons to form a dense, colourful carpet over time. Its charming common name refers to the clusters of open flowers (the foxes) alongside tightly closed buds (the cubs).
Uses
Fox and Cubs is cherished for its ornamental impact and is a vibrant addition to wildflower meadows, pollinator gardens and informal borders. The flowers are highly attractive to bees and butterflies. Although not widely used today, the plant does appear in older herbal traditions, where it was occasionally associated with remedies linked to the respiratory system and is now primarily grown for its beauty and ecological value.

Folklore
In folk tradition, Orange Hawkweed was associated with the hawk’s keen sight and watchfulness, reflected in its name and upright stance. Its vivid orange flowers, appearing around midsummer, linked it to the height of the sun’s power and to themes of vigilance, courage and clarity. The plant’s fiery colouring suggested an affinity with heat and brightness and it was sometimes regarded as a quiet protector rather than an aggressive one. Forming dense mats close to the ground, Orange Hawkweed was believed to guard boundaries, edges and liminal spaces, both practical and symbolic. In this way, it came to represent alertness, territorial guardianship and the steady defence of what has already been claimed
