Organically grown Fox and Cubs – Pilosella aurantiaca in a 8 cm pot.      A striking perennial wildflower with vivid orange-red, dandelion-like flowers held aloft on tall, leafless stems above a low rosette of hairy leaves. Flowering from late spring to early autumn, it spreads by stolons and forms a dense, colourful mat over time. Its name, “Fox and Cubs,” refers to the charming combination of open flowers (foxes) and unopened buds (cubs) clustered together.

Uses

Much loved in wildflower gardens and pollinator-friendly spaces, Fox and Cubs is especially attractive to bees and butterflies. Though not widely used in modern herbalism, it was once used in traditional remedies for respiratory support.

Folklore

In folklore, Orange Hawkweed was believed to carry the keen sight of the hawk, hence the name “Hawkweed.” Its fiery colour linked it to the element of fire and to the midsummer sun, and it was sometimes planted for courage and protection. The dense groundcover it forms was said to guard boundaries and sacred spaces.

Growing Information

Thrives in full sun and well-drained soil, including poor and sandy conditions. Ideal for wildflower meadows, rockeries, and informal borders. May spread rapidly in the right conditions, so best planted where it can naturalise freely. Drought tolerant once established.
