Organically grown Mandrake - Mandragora autumnalis in an 9cm pot.    A rare and legendary plant, the autumn mandrake forms a low rosette of dark green leaves and produces striking violet-purple, bell-shaped flowers in autumn, followed by small yellow fruits. Below ground, the plant develops a thick, often forked root with an uncanny, anthropomorphic appearance. Native to the Mediterranean, it is adapted to dry summers and mild winters, and is both slow-growing and long-lived.

Uses

Mandrake holds a powerful place in folklore, where it has long been associated with protection, dreamwork, and visionary states. Historically, its root was used with great caution in traditional herbal practices, and it remains a plant of high ritual and symbolic importance. This plant is not for internal use and should be handled with care.

Folklore

ew plants are surrounded by as much myth and superstition as the Mandrake. Rooted in ancient Mediterranean traditions, it was long believed to emit a deadly scream when pulled from the ground, requiring elaborate rituals for harvesting. In magical texts, Mandrake is associated with protection, fertility, and dream work, and has been used historically in flying ointments and talismans. Its distinctive human-like root has fascinated herbalists, alchemists, and occultists for centuries. Not a plant for dabblers, Mandrake belongs to a long tradition of plant magic that calls for respect, patience, and understanding.

Growing Information
