Organically grown Lady’s Bedstraw – Galium verum in an 8 cm pot.  A low-growing, mat-forming perennial with slender stems and whorls of fine, needle-like leaves. In summer, Lady’s Bedstraw bursts into bright yellow, honey-scented flower clusters that are loved by bees. It typically grows up to 60 cm (2 ft) tall and spreads easily, thriving in wildflower meadows, grasslands, and sunny banks.

Uses

Traditionally used as a natural rennet in cheese-making, Lady’s Bedstraw also yields a vivid yellow dye from its flowers and a red dye from its roots. It has been used in herbal medicine for its gentle diuretic and anti-inflammatory properties and was once added to straw mattresses for its sweet scent and reputed calming qualities.

Folklore

Lady’s Bedstraw is steeped in folklore and was said to be the herb that lined the manger of the Virgin Mary, hence its name. Associated with protection, sleep, and childbirth, it was used in midsummer rituals, woven into garlands, and scattered in homes to bring peace. In Norse tradition, it was sacred to Frigg, goddess of motherhood, and believed to promote restful sleep and ease in labour.
