Organically grown Lamb’s Ears – Stachys byzantina in a 9cm pot.                      A low growing, perennial plant prized for its thick, velvety, silver-grey leaves that form soft, spreading clumps. Typically reaching around 30–40cm (12–16in) in height, Lamb’s Ears creates a calming, tactile presence in the garden. In early to mid-summer, upright stems may appear bearing small pink to purple flowers, though the foliage remains the main attraction. A familiar and much loved plant in cottage, sensory and dry garden schemes.

Uses

Lamb’s Ears is valued primarily for its ornamental and sensory qualities, with its exceptionally soft foliage making it a favourite in sensory and therapeutic gardens. In traditional herbal lore, the leaves were sometimes used externally and were associated with comfort and gentle protection. The plant is also useful in garden design, providing contrast to darker leaved plants and softening edges along paths and borders.

Growing Information

Thrives in full sun and freely draining soil and prefers dry to moderately fertile conditions. Once established, it is drought tolerant and well suited to borders, banks and gravel gardens. Avoid winter wet, which can cause foliage to rot. Remove spent flower stems and tidy older leaves in spring to keep plants compact and healthy.

Folklore

Lamb’s Ears has long been cherished in European gardens and meadows for its soft, silvery leaves and gentle presence. In folk tradition, it was associated with humility, comfort and care, often used symbolically to represent gentleness and attentiveness. Its downy leaves were sometimes used in bedding or medicinal poultices, reinforcing its reputation as a soothing, protective plant.
