Organically grown Lemon Balm – Melissa officinalis in a 9cm pot.                      A hardy, bushy perennial herb with softly crinkled, bright green leaves and a fresh lemon scent released when touched. Plants typically reach 60–90cm (2–3ft) in height and form generous clumps. In summer, small white flowers appear, which are highly attractive to bees and other pollinators. Lemon Balm has been grown for centuries in herb beds, monastery gardens and cottage gardens for both its usefulness and gentle presence.

Uses

Lemon Balm has a long history of use as a soothing and restorative herb and has traditionally been associated with calming the nervous system and supporting emotional balance. It has also been valued for its uplifting qualities and gentle digestive support. Today it is widely grown for its fragrance, pollinator friendly flowers and as a staple plant in traditional and modern herb gardens.

Growing Information

Thrives in well drained soil in full sun or partial shade and prefers moderately fertile conditions. Lemon Balm is easy to grow and establishes quickly with regular watering during its first season. Once established, it is resilient and tolerant of a range of conditions. Plants can self seed freely, so deadheading is recommended if spread is not desired. Cutting back after flowering encourages fresh, leafy growth. Suitable for borders, herb gardens and large containers.

Folklore

Lemon Balm has long been associated with joy, longevity and the strengthening of the spirit. Paracelsus praised it as an herb that “revives the heart,” and beekeepers historically grew Lemon Balm to attract and soothe bees, linking the plant to harmony, abundance and the blessing of communal prosperity.
