Organically grown Madder – Rubia tinctorum in a 9cm pot.                                A long lived, herbaceous perennial with scrambling, climbing stems reaching up to 1.5m (5ft). Madder has whorled, lance shaped leaves edged with tiny hooked hairs that help it cling as it grows. In summer, it produces clusters of small, yellowish flowers from June to August, followed by red to black berries. Native to the Mediterranean and western Asia, Madder has been cultivated for thousands of years for its powerful dye producing roots.

Uses

Madder is best known as one of the most important historical dye plants, yielding a rich spectrum of reds, pinks, oranges and rust tones from its roots. It was widely used for dyeing textiles, tapestries, carpets and military uniforms, including the famous “Turkey red.” In traditional herbal practice, Madder root was also associated with cleansing and diuretic qualities.

Growing Information

Thrives in freely draining, sandy or loamy soil in full sun to partial shade. Prefers a warm, sheltered position and benefits from space to spread, as it develops a deep and extensive root system over time. Can be trained along supports or allowed to scramble naturally. Roots are typically harvested after 2–3 years once plants are well established. Cut back top growth in autumn as the plant dies back for winter.
