Uses

Historically significant as a source of rich blue dye, Woad has been used since ancient times for textiles and body art. In herbal medicine, it is valued for its astringent and antimicrobial properties. In magical practice, Woad is associated with transformation, endurance, and protective energy.

Folklore

A plant of warriors and mystics, Woad was famously used by ancient Celts and Picts to dye their bodies blue before battle, invoking the protection of war deities like Andraste, the British warrior goddess. It was considered a sacred dye, symbolising strength, resilience, and defiance. In folk traditions, Woad was believed to offer protection against harm and misfortune and was sometimes used in charms or worn as a talisman.

Growing Information

Prefers well-drained, alkaline to neutral soils in full sun. Thrives in dry, poor soils and tolerates drought conditions. Space plants about 30 cm (12 inches) apart. Allow plants to overwinter for seed production in their second year. Regular weeding is essential to reduce competition.
