Uses

Dyer’s Greenweed is a traditional source of strong yellow dye, particularly from the flowering stems and was the favoured yellow dye of the Vikings, with evidence of its use found in archaeological digs in York. When overdyed with woad, it produces the rich “Robin Hood” or Lincoln green, while combinations with madder can yield warm tangerine hues. Also known as Dyer’s Broom, the plant’s woody stems were historically used for making sweeping brushes. In modern natural dyeing it remains widely used, including in Turkish carpet traditions. Beyond its dyeing legacy, Dyer’s Greenweed is highly valued in wildlife gardens, providing nectar and pollen for bees and acting as a food plant for over twenty species of moths, including several rare species that rely on it exclusively.

Growing Information

Thrives in full sun and well drained, moderately fertile soil. Tolerant of drought and ideal for dry meadows, wildlife borders and dye gardens. Cut back lightly after flowering to maintain its shape and encourage fresh growth. The whole flowering stem is typically harvested for dye, especially when vibrant yellow tones are desired.

Folklore

Dyer’s Greenweed is a long familiar plant of open ground, heaths, and grassy banks across Britain and Europe. Thriving where soils are thin and conditions exposed, it became associated with endurance, persistence, and the quiet strength needed to survive in harsh places. Its bright yellow flowers were linked in folklore with warmth and vitality, a sudden flare of life and colour in sparse landscapes. Traditionally, the tough, wiry stems were gathered and bound to make simple brooms, tying the plant to ideas of cleansing, order and the steady maintenance of home and land. Though not surrounded by elaborate myth, Greenweed belongs to the tradition of humble working plants, valued for usefulness, resilience and reliability rather than ceremony or spectacle. It carries the character of a survivor, marking places where life continues against the odds.
