Organically grown Feverfew – Tanacetum parthenium in a 9cm pot.                  A bright, aromatic perennial with finely divided, apple scented green foliage and masses of small, daisy-like white flowers with yellow centres, blooming from midsummer into early autumn. Typically reaching around 60cm (24in) in height, Feverfew is an easygoing, resilient plant with a long history in herb gardens and cottage style plantings.

Uses

Feverfew has been traditionally used in European herbal practice, most notably in relation to headaches and migraines and has long been associated with easing tension and discomfort. In garden lore, it is valued as a companion plant, believed to deter unwanted insects while attracting pollinators such as bees and hoverflies. It has also been regarded as a protective plant, commonly grown near doorways or paths.

Growing Information

Folklore

Feverfew has long been regarded as a protective and restorative plant in European folk tradition, particularly in the medieval period. Its name reflects its historical association with easing heat and imbalance, but in folklore it was valued just as much for its role as a guardian plant. Often grown close to dwellings, it was believed to help maintain harmony within the household and to guard against misfortune. Feverfew became associated with Hera, as a protector of the home and marriage, and later with Brigid, whose domains of healing, inspiration and guardianship echo the plant’s steady, watchful character. In folk belief, Feverfew was not dramatic or forceful, but quietly present, a plant that worked by maintaining balance rather than confronting danger directly.
