Organically grown Mugwort – Artemisia vulgaris, known in Welsh as Beidiog Lwyd, in an 8 cm pot. An upright, herbaceous perennial with a spreading, rhizomatous root system. Mugwort grows up to 183 cm (6 ft) tall and is typically found along roadsides, field edges, and wild, uncultivated spaces. Its deep green, aromatic, lobed leaves are silvery underneath, and creamy-yellow flower panicles bloom in late summer.

Uses

Mugwort has a long history in traditional medicine, used to support digestion, menstruation, circulation, and liver health. It has also been valued as a calming, gently sedating herb.

Folklore

Sacred to Artemis, Greek goddess of the moon and wild places, Mugwort is a plant of protection, prophecy, and vision. It was traditionally burned to purify and enhance intuition, tucked into pillows for dream work, and carried by travellers for safe passage and endurance.

Growing Information

Prefers full sun and fertile, well-drained soil. Will tolerate poorer soils but may struggle in wet, heavy ground. Can be invasive in ideal conditions. Propagate by root division in spring or autumn. Remove flower heads to reduce self-seeding. Cut back to ground level in autumn. Generally pest-free but may be susceptible to honey fungus.
