Organically grown Mugwort – Artemisia vulgaris in a 9cm pot. An upright, herbaceous perennial with a spreading, rhizomatous root system, growing up to 180cm (6ft) tall. Found in waste places, roadsides, and uncultivated soils, Mugwort produces creamy-yellow flowers in late summer in dense, leafy panicles. Its deeply lobed, aromatic green leaves are silvery underneath, adding texture and scent to borders and wild areas.
Uses
Historically valued in herbal medicine systems worldwide, Mugwort has been used to support digestion, menstruation and relaxation. Its leaves and flowers are often made into teas, infusions or used in ritual and dreamwork practices, where it is associated with divination, protection and heightened awareness.

Growing Information
Prefers full sun and fertile, well drained soil. Tolerates poorer soils but may struggle in wet, heavy ground. Reduce the height by half to prevent wind rock over winter, while leaving some growth to provide habitat for overwintering insects. Cut down to ground level in spring when new growth appears. Remove flower heads to reduce self seeding. Generally pest free, but may be susceptible to honey fungus.
Folklore
Mugwort holds a revered place in European folk tradition as a plant of protection, liminality and deep intuition. Known in the Anglo-Saxon Nine Herbs Charm as the “oldest of herbs,” it was believed to guard travellers, ward off harm and strengthen those who walked between worlds. Often gathered at midsummer or on liminal nights, Mugwort was carried for protection, placed beneath pillows, or hung at thresholds to safeguard against ill fortune. Closely tied to dreaming and visionary states, it became a trusted companion of wise women, midwives and seers. Mugwort’s folklore speaks of a plant that bridges the seen and unseen, offering gentle guidance rather than force.
