Organically grown Sawwort – Serratula tinctoria in a 9 cm pot.                A slender, upright perennial reaching up to 60 cm (2 ft) tall, with finely toothed, lance shaped leaves and thistle like, reddish-purple flower heads blooming from July to September. Native to Europe and commonly found in damp meadows and open woodland, Sawwort is an elegant wildflower with both ornamental and practical value.

Uses

Sawwort is a traditional dye plant, yielding a soft yellow colour from its leaves and flowering tops. It was once used in Europe for dyeing wool and linen and is still of interest to natural dyers seeking gentle, earthy tones. The name tinctoria itself indicates its historic role in dyeing. It is also a nectar-rich plant, attracting bees and butterflies, and is well-suited for wildlife gardens or naturalised meadow settings.

Folklore

Though less common in modern herbalism, Sawwort was once valued for healing wounds and mending ruptures. Its Latin name Serratula may refer to its “saw-like” leaves, thought to symbolise sharpness and clarity. It was sometimes used in charms for strength and stamina, connecting it to the endurance of wild meadows.

Growing Information

Prefers moist, well-drained soil in full sun or light shade. Tolerates a range of soils including clay, and thrives in naturalistic planting schemes, wildflower areas, and dye gardens. Sawwort is low maintenance and hardy, and will return reliably each year once established.
