Uses

Traditionally used in herbal medicine for its mild sedative and diuretic properties. Sweet Woodruff can be used as a natural dye plant — its roots and leaves can produce subtle shades of red to brown when used with the right mordants. Traditionally, it has been used to dye textiles and yarns in soft earthy tones. The dried foliage emits a sweet, hay-like fragrance and has been used in potpourris and as a natural air freshener.

Folklore

A plant of love, joy, and enchantment, Sweet Woodruff was often used in May Day celebrations and was a favorite herb for strewing on floors to scent the air. It is sacred to Venus, the goddess of love and beauty, and Freyja, the Norse goddess of magic and fertility. In folk traditions, it was used to bring happiness, attract love, and ensure peaceful sleep. Placed in sachets or pillows, it was believed to bring sweet dreams and ward off harm.
