When dried, it releases a beautiful, sweet hay-like fragrance reminiscent of vanilla and fresh spring meadows. Traditionally, it has been used to scent linens and wines, calm the heart and attract love and good fortune.
Uses
Sweet Woodruff can be used to make a fragrant herbal tea, added to potpourri, or burned as a gentle incense. The dried herb may also be tucked into charm bags or drawers to perfume clothes and keep moths away. In the kitchen, it can be used to subtly flavour puddings, cream desserts or sweet wines such as the traditional German Maibowle. Use sparingly to impart a soft, vanilla-like aroma.
Directions for use
For tea, steep 1 teaspoon of dried Sweet Woodruff in hot (not boiling) water for 5–7 minutes to preserve its delicate aroma. For fragrance or magical use, place a small handful of the dried herb in linen pouches, charm bags or bowls to scent drawers and sacred spaces, traditionally used to attract love, peace and good fortune.

In medieval Europe, Sweet Woodruff was strewn on church floors and woven into garlands for May Day celebrations. Known as “Our Lady’s Lace,” it was associated with purity, protection and the blessings of spring. It was also a key ingredient in Maibowle a German May wine infused with the herb to welcome the season of renewal. Sweet Woodruff’s gentle scent was believed to calm anger, invite joy and sweeten the spirit.
