Organically grown Viper's Bugloss - Echium vulgare known in Welsh as Tafod y Bwch in a 8 cm pot. A biennial or short-lived perennial, Viper's Bugloss features striking spikes of bright blue flowers with protruding red stamens, blooming from late spring through summer. Growing between 30–80 cm (12–31 inches) tall, its rough, hairy leaves and stems are characteristic of the species.

Uses

Highly attractive to bees and other pollinators, Viper's Bugloss is renowned for its nectar production, contributing to high-quality honey. Its vivid flowers and extended blooming period make it a favorite in wildflower meadows and pollinator gardens.The root contains a red dye and was used in the past by peasant girls in Sweden who wanted to dye their cheeks red. It has also been used in textile dyeing.

Folklore

With its striking blue flowers and serpent-like appearance, Viper’s Bugloss has long been linked to protection and resilience. It was once believed to counteract snake venom and was associated with Asclepius, the Greek god of healing. In medieval folklore, it was thought to grant courage and was sometimes carried as a charm for strength in battle. It is also linked to transformation, shedding the old like a serpent’s skin.

Growing Information

Thrives in well-drained, calcareous soils in full sun. Commonly found in dry grasslands, roadsides, and coastal areas. It is drought-tolerant and prefers poor soils, making it suitable for xeriscaping. Caution is advised as it can be invasive in some regions and contains compounds toxic to livestock if ingested in large quantities.
