Organically grown Yomogi / Japanese Mugwort – Artemisia princeps in a 9cm pot. A vigorous aromatic perennial herb closely related to Common Mugwort, Yomogi has deeply divided green foliage with silvery undersides and a strong herbal fragrance when brushed or crushed. Widely used in Japan and other parts of East Asia, it has a long cultural history connected to seasonal foods, traditional herbal practices and ceremonial plant use. Plants form spreading clumps that bring texture and movement to herb gardens, apothecary collections and naturalistic planting schemes.
Part of our growing Artemisia collection, Yomogi sits beautifully alongside our other mugworts and wormwoods, offering a slightly different character to the more familiar European species. A wonderful addition for collectors of aromatic herbs, ethnobotanical plants and anyone drawn to the wild, silvery world of the Artemisia family.
Uses
Traditionally used in Japanese cuisine and herbal traditions, Yomogi is especially associated with springtime foods, herbal teas and ceremonial or seasonal preparations. The young leaves have historically been incorporated into recipes such as kusa mochi and herbal infusions. Like many Artemisia species, it has a long folk history connected to purification, protection and aromatic plant traditions. Also valued as an attractive foliage plant for sensory, medicinal and ethnobotanical gardens.

Growing Information
Thrives in full sun or partial shade in well-drained soil. Yomogi is hardy, vigorous and easy to grow, spreading gradually through underground rhizomes once established. Plants can be cut back to encourage fresh young growth and maintain a bushier habit. Suitable for herb gardens, wildlife-friendly planting schemes, apothecary gardens and large containers where spread can be more easily managed. Best positioned where its aromatic foliage can be appreciated when brushed past.
Folklore
Known in Japan as Yomogi, Japanese Mugwort has long been gathered in spring as both a food and protective herb. Traditionally used in teas, rice cakes and seasonal dishes, it was believed to strengthen the body and guard against harmful influences. In East Asian folk practice, mugwort was hung near entrances or burned for purification and protection, while its connection to renewal and vitality linked it closely to the turning of the seasons. In Korea, mugwort also appears in the foundation myth of Dangun, where it was associated with endurance, transformation, and the passage between states of being.
Yamogi is worked with to encourage intuitive clarity, emotional balance, and gentle energetic protection. Like other Artemisia species, it supports dreamwork and liminal awareness but its energy is often experienced as softer and more restorative than forceful or confrontational. Its Venusian nature encourages harmony between body, mind and spirit, making it suitable for meditation, ritual cleansing and practices focused on inner alignment or creative renewal. Yamogi is also associated with seasonal transition and the refreshing of stagnant energy, particularly in spring rites or restorative workings.
