Organically grown Ashwagandha – Withania somnifera in a 8 cm pot      A tender perennial shrub growing up to 75 cm (30 in) with soft, grey-green, ovate leaves and small, pale green flowers that develop into bright red berries encased in papery calyxes. Known as “Indian ginseng,” Ashwagandha is a member of the nightshade family, native to dry regions of India and the Middle East, and cultivated worldwide for its medicinal and cultural value.

Uses

Highly valued in traditional Ayurveda, Ashwagandha root is renowned as an adaptogen, said to support resilience to stress, improve sleep, and promote vitality. Its roots are the primary part used in herbal preparations, while the plant also holds ornamental and symbolic appeal.

Folklore

Ashwagandha means “smell of the horse” in Sanskrit, referring to the belief that it imparts the strength and stamina of a horse. It has been revered for centuries as a rejuvenating herb of grounding and vitality. In Vedic tradition, it was considered a Rasayana — a plant that promotes longevity and balance — and was sometimes planted near homes as a protective and auspicious presence.

Growing Information

Ashwagandha thrives in full sun and well-drained, sandy soil, preferring warm, dry conditions. In the UK, it is best grown as an annual or overwintered indoors in a frost-free greenhouse. Water sparingly once established, as it is drought-tolerant and prone to rot in heavy, wet soils.
