Thrives in poor to moderately fertile, alkaline, well drained soil in full sun with some shelter. Perfect for rock gardens, containers or as a low ground cover in dry areas. Dislikes winter wet and may require protection from frost; can be grown in a container in a glasshouse or moved indoors to a bright spot over winter. Cut back in early spring as new growth emerges to maintain shape and encourage healthy foliage.

Dittany of Crete is one of the most storied plants of the ancient Mediterranean world, native to the mountains and rocky cliffs of Crete. In Greek tradition, it was sacred to Artemis, goddess of wild places and protector of life, and was believed to possess remarkable powers of restoration and protection. Classical writers described wild goats seeking out dittany after being wounded, giving rise to its reputation as a plant that draws out harm and restores wholeness. It also appears in myth as a gift of divine intervention, said to have been used by Aphrodite to heal Aeneas after battle.
