Native to the rocky slopes of Crete, this aromatic herb is both ornamental and unique. Our plants are propagated from ethically collected seeds from Crete, offering a rare opportunity to grow Dittany in the UK. Its soft foliage, subtle scent, and elegant blooms make it a standout addition to rock gardens, containers or dry, sunny corners of the garden.

Uses

Traditionally valued in Greek herbal medicine, Dittany is well documented in historical sources relating to digestive and respiratory care. It has also been revered in magical and folkloric traditions, particularly in connection with love, protection and divination. Today, the plant is primarily grown for its ornamental qualities and its deep cultural, historical and symbolic significance.

Growing Information

Thrives in poor to moderately fertile, alkaline, well drained soil in full sun with some shelter. Perfect for rock gardens, containers or as a low ground cover in dry areas. Dislikes winter wet and may require protection from frost; can be grown in a container in a glasshouse or moved indoors to a bright spot over winter. Cut back in early spring as new growth emerges to maintain shape and encourage healthy foliage.

Folklore

Dittany of Crete is one of the most storied plants of the ancient Mediterranean world, native to the mountains and rocky cliffs of Crete. In Greek tradition, it was sacred to Artemis, goddess of wild places and protector of life, and was believed to possess remarkable powers of restoration and protection. Classical writers described wild goats seeking out dittany after being wounded, giving rise to its reputation as a plant that draws out harm and restores wholeness. It also appears in myth as a gift of divine intervention, said to have been used by Aphrodite to heal Aeneas after battle. Revered and difficult to gather, Dittany became a symbol of rare virtue, protection, and the benevolent aid of the gods.

In addition to matters of the heart, Dittany is traditionally used for protection, particularly against danger or harmful forces, and for courage in challenging situations. It may be added to charm bundles, worn symbolically, or placed in ritual spaces to support bravery, boundary keeping and the careful navigation of love, desire and risk.
