Organically grown Hyssop – Hyssopus officinalis in a 9cm pot.                        A woody, semi-evergreen perennial growing to around 60cm (2ft) tall, with narrow, aromatic green leaves and upright spikes of blue to pink flowers blooming from July to September. A long lived and handsome plant, Hyssop has been a feature of monastery, physic and cottage gardens for centuries.

Uses

Hyssop is renowned in traditional herbal practice, particularly in relation to the respiratory system and was commonly used for coughs, colds and congestion. In folklore and plant lore, it is closely associated with purification and protection, often planted near dwellings or used in cleansing rites. Its nectar rich flowers are highly attractive to bees and butterflies, making it a valuable plant for pollinator friendly gardens.

Thrives in full sun and freely draining soil and prefers a warm, sheltered position. Once established, Hyssop tolerates dry conditions well. Suitable for herb gardens, borders and containers and benefits from a light trim after flowering to maintain shape and encourage fresh growth.
