Organically grown Milk Thistle – Silybum marianum in a 8 cm pot

A hardy biennial herb growing up to 1.5 m (5 ft) with tall, spiny stems, striking marbled leaves, and large purple thistle-like flowers produced in its second year. Native to the Mediterranean but naturalised across much of Europe, Milk Thistle has been valued since ancient times as a traditional medicinal plant, particularly associated with liver health and protection. Its dramatic form makes it both ornamental and useful in the apothecary or herb garden.

Uses

Milk Thistle has a long history of use in European and Middle Eastern herbal traditions, primarily for supporting and protecting the liver. While no claims can be made here about medicinal action, it remains one of the most culturally significant herbs in traditional medicine and folklore.

Folklore

According to legend, the white marbling on its leaves appeared where drops of the Virgin Mary’s milk fell, hence the name “Milk Thistle.” The plant was also considered a protective charm against evil spirits and a guardian herb for travellers.

Growing Information

Milk Thistle is a hardy biennial that thrives in poor or dry soils and full sun. It can grow up to 1.5 metres tall, producing dramatic purple flowers in its second year. Allow it space as it is spiny and bold. Self-seeds readily if seed heads are left to mature.
