Mullein is a tall, stately biennial with soft, downy leaves and bright yellow flowers that rise like torches from hedgerows and meadows. Traditionally used as a soothing remedy for the lungs and throat, Mullein helps calm dry, irritated airways and supports clear, easy breathing. It is a gentle, grounding plant ally, offering steadiness and light during times of heaviness or fatigue.

Uses

Traditionally taken to soothe coughs, calm irritation in the chest and throat, and support respiratory health. Mullein is also used to gently strengthen the lungs after illness and to bring balance to the breath during emotional stress or anxiety.

Folklore

In folklore, Mullein was known as “The Hag’s Taper” for its tall flowering spikes, which were once dipped in tallow and burned as candles to ward off evil spirits. Roman soldiers are said to have lined their sandals with its soft leaves for comfort, while herbalists of old prized it as a plant of courage and illumination. Mullein’s tall, golden spire was seen as a beacon of protection, a light in the darkness.
