Organically grown Mullein – Verbascum thapsus in an 8 cm pot. A tall, stately biennial wildflower reaching up to 2 m (6.5 ft) in its second year. It forms a low rosette of large, soft, woolly leaves in its first year, followed by a towering spike of densely packed yellow flowers from June to September. A classic feature of cottage gardens and wild borders.

Uses

Traditionally used in herbalism as a gentle respiratory support, particularly for dry coughs and lung irritation. The leaves and flowers have been used in teas, oils, and poultices.

Folklore

Mullein has long been seen as a plant of light and protection. In folklore, its tall flower stalks were dipped in tallow and used as torches. Associated with warding off evil spirits, it was carried by travellers for safety and often planted near dwellings to keep away negativity. In magical traditions, mullein is linked to courage and inner strength.

Growing Information

Thrives in poor, well-drained soils in full sun. Exceptionally drought-tolerant and ideal for wildflower meadows, wildlife gardens, or dry, open spaces. Self-seeds readily and attracts bees and hoverflies. Deadhead if you wish to reduce reseeding.
