Organically grown Mullein – Verbascum thapsus in a 9cm pot.                          A tall, stately biennial wildflower reaching up to 2m (6ft 6in) in its second year. In the first year, it forms a low rosette of large, soft, woolly leaves, followed by a towering spike of densely packed yellow flowers from June to September. A classic feature of cottage gardens, wild borders and naturalised meadows.

Uses

Traditionally valued in herbalism for gentle respiratory support, particularly for dry coughs and lung irritation. The leaves and flowers have historically been used in teas, oils and poultices. Mullein is also a pollinator friendly plant, attracting bees, hoverflies and other beneficial insects.

Growing Information

Thrives in poor, well drained soils in full sun. Exceptionally drought tolerant and ideal for wildflower meadows, wildlife gardens or dry, open spaces. Self seeds readily, deadhead if you wish to limit reseeding.

Folklore

Mullein has long been regarded as a plant of boundaries, endurance and quiet guardianship. Rising tall from disturbed ground and waste places, it was often seen as a sentinel plant, marking edges, roadsides and thresholds. In European folklore, its soft leaves were associated with protection and shelter, while its towering flower spike was linked to watchfulness and steadiness. Mullein was sometimes called “hag’s taper” or “witch’s candle,” reflecting its role as a light carried through dark or uncertain places.
