Folklore

Rue has a long and complex history in European folklore, where it was regarded as a powerful plant of protection and authority. Known as the “herb of grace,” it was used in religious rites for blessing and purification, often carried by clergy or woven into sprinkling brushes for holy water. In folk belief, Rue was planted near doorways or carried on the body to ward off illness, envy and harmful influences. Despite its bitterness, it was valued for its strength and clarity, believed to sharpen perception and guard against deception. Rue’s reputation was not one of gentleness, but of clear sight and firm boundaries, a plant that stands watch rather than offers comfort.
