Meaning "healthy hay" in French, Sainfoin has been valued as a plant of nourishment, fertility, and abundance. Though not commonly associated with a specific deity, it has ties to agrarian goddesses such as Demeter and Ceres, who governed the fertility of the land. In European folklore, sainfoin fields were believed to bring good fortune to farmers, and it was sometimes planted near homes to ensure prosperity and harmony.

Growing Information

Thrives in well-drained, chalky or calcareous soil and prefers full sun. Drought-tolerant once established, making it ideal for dry meadows and wildflower gardens.
