Uses

Traditionally used in herbal medicine for its antiseptic and stimulant properties. In folklore, southernwood is associated with love and protection. The aromatic foliage has been used in sachets and as an insect repellent.

Folklore

Known as “Lad’s Love” and “Old Man,” Southernwood has long been associated with love magic, protection, and prosperity. It is sacred to Artemis and Diana, goddesses of the hunt and independence, and was often used in love charms or placed under pillows to encourage dreams of one’s future spouse. In folk traditions, Southernwood is believed to repel negativity, and branches of it were carried for protection against misfortune.
