Organically grown Southernwood – Artemisia abrotanum in a 9cm pot.            A woody, perennial shrub growing to around 1m (3ft) tall, with finely divided, grey-green foliage that releases a strong, fresh aroma when brushed or crushed. Small, yellowish flower heads may appear in late summer, though the plant is most valued for its elegant foliage. Traditionally grown in herb gardens and cottage gardens, Southernwood brings structure, scent and historical interest to planting schemes.

Uses

Southernwood has a long history of use in European herbal practice, where it was valued for its aromatic, antiseptic and gently stimulating qualities. The foliage has also been used historically in sachets, wardrobes and household settings, particularly for its strong scent and traditional association with deterring insects.

Folklore

Southernwood has been a familiar presence in European gardens for centuries, valued as much for its symbolic role as for its practical one. Often planted near doorways, paths and household edges, it became associated with protection, order and watchfulness. In folklore, Southernwood was linked with clarity of thought and the keeping of boundaries, believed to discourage unwanted influences through its strong, bitter scent. Its finely divided leaves and tidy habit contributed to its reputation as a plant of discernment and control, one that marked the threshold between what belonged and what did not.
