Southernwood is a fragrant perennial shrub with fine, feathery leaves and a refreshing lemony scent. Once a familiar cottage garden herb, it was prized for its cleansing, stimulating, and protective qualities. Closely related to Wormwood and Mugwort, Southernwood carries the bright, uplifting side of the Artemisia family invigorating yet gentle.

Uses

Traditionally used as a herbal tea or external tonic to support circulation, clear the mind, and ward off fatigue. Southernwood’s aromatic foliage is also valued in herbal sachets and as incense for purification, protection, and renewal.

Folklore

In old herbals, Southernwood was called Lad’s Love and Old Man, and was often tucked into hymn books and pockets as a fragrant keepsake. It was said to protect against illness and enchantment, and was a common garden plant in monastery physic gardens. The scent was believed to quicken the senses and strengthen courage. In rural folklore, Southernwood was also used to deter moths and insects when hung among clothes and linens.
