Sweetgrass is a sacred aromatic grass with long, glossy green blades that release a warm, sweet, vanilla like fragrance when dried. Revered in both spiritual and folk traditions, it is burned to purify, attract blessings and call in harmony and good spirits. Its gentle smoke carries prayers and intentions skyward, leaving a calm, uplifting atmosphere.
At Pretty Wild Plants, our Sweetgrass is grown at home here in Pembrokeshire, harvested by hand and dried slowly to preserve its soft scent and vibrant energy.
Uses
Dried Sweetgrass can be burned as incense for cleansing and blessing spaces or kept whole as a charm for peace, love and protection. The cut grass can be added to loose incense blends, sachets or potpourri to sweeten and purify the air.
Traditionally, Sweetgrass has also been used in herbal teas and infusions for coughs, colds and respiratory support. Its pleasant, sweet aroma lends a delicate flavour to drinks and desserts, use sparingly for a gentle vanilla like note.
Directions for use
Burn a small pinch of dried grass on a charcoal disc or in a heatproof dish, allowing the sweet smoke to fill the space. For tea, steep a few strands in hot (not boiling) water for 5–10 minutes. Extinguish smoke safely after use.
CAUTIONS: For incense or tea use only. Burn responsibly in a well-ventilated space and never leave unattended. Use small amounts in teas or food. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

Known to many Indigenous peoples of North America as the “hair of Mother Earth,” Sweetgrass is a sacred plant of prayer, gratitude, and renewal. It was burned to invite benevolent spirits and cleanse the heart before a ceremony. In European folklore, Sweetgrass was strewn on church floors to perfume the air and symbolise divine blessing. Its sweetness was said to draw in kind spirits and repel negativity.
