Organically grown Sweetgrass – Hierochloe odorata, in an 8 cm pot. A hardy perennial grass growing up to 60 cm (2 ft) tall, with slender green leaves that release a sweet, vanilla-like scent when dried. It spreads by rhizomes and forms dense clumps, making it a valuable addition to wildlife gardens and ceremonial plantings.

Uses

Sweetgrass has been traditionally used for purification, protection, and spiritual connection. It is burned as incense to invite positive energies, woven into braids for ceremonial use, or incorporated into herbal blends. It has also been used in traditional crafts such as basket weaving and cordage making.

Folklore

Known as the “hair of Mother Earth” in many Indigenous North American traditions, Sweetgrass is used to invite harmony, gratitude, and connection with the spirit world. It is one of the four sacred plants in some Native practices and often used in incense and prayer ceremonies. In European folk traditions, Sweetgrass was used for protection and attracting benevolent spirits—sometimes strewn across the floor of churches or homes to release its sweet scent underfoot. As Robin Wall Kimmerer explores in Braiding Sweetgrass, this plant reminds us of the power of reciprocity, kinship, and reverence for the more-than-human world.

Growing Information

Prefers moist, well-drained soil in full sun to partial shade. It spreads by rhizomes and will naturalize in the right conditions. Regular trimming encourages healthy growth. Thrives in borders, meadows, or container plantings.
