Organically grown Weld – Reseda luteola in an 8 cm pot.                           A tall, upright biennial with slender, lance-shaped leaves and spires of small, greenish-yellow flowers blooming from June to September. Weld can grow up to 1.5 m (5 ft) tall in its second year. Often found on disturbed ground, roadsides, and in wildflower-rich grasslands, this hardy plant is a valuable addition to dye gardens and wildlife areas.

Uses

Weld is one of the oldest known dye plants in Europe, used since antiquity to produce a brilliant, lightfast yellow dye. The whole plant, especially the flowering tops are rich in luteolin, a natural yellow pigment prized by traditional textile dyers. It’s often used in combination with indigo or madder to create complex natural colours. Weld is also loved by pollinators, especially bees.

Folklore

Weld was traditionally gathered around Midsummer, when its dye was thought to be strongest. It has long been associated with solar energy, joy, and illumination, used in folk crafts and rituals to bring clarity and warmth. Some traditions also believed that weld protected against misfortune and enhanced the energy of other dye plants when grown nearby.

Growing Information

Thrives in well-drained, poor to moderately fertile soil and prefers full sun. Weld is drought-tolerant and ideal for wildflower meadows, dye gardens, and cottage borders. It will self-seed readily if allowed.
